Coffin nails — also called ballerina nails — have tapered sides cut flat across the tip. The two names describe the same shape.

Coffin needs length: the taper has to travel before it meets the flat tip, so on very short nails it simply reads as a squoval. The flat tip also gives nail art the largest usable surface of any shape. Best on longer fingers and narrower nail beds. Compare shapes here.
